USAID-Supported Workshops Underway

June 28, 2017

With USAID support, the Institute of Global Environmental Strategies, in partnership with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and The GLOBE Program, is conducting a series of USAID-backed workshops to increase public awareness and community action to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in Brazil and Peru. This innovative project encourages adoption of citizen science protocols in the school systems. NASA’s GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper app is integral to the approach and helps users identify and eradicate mosquito habitat around schools and the surrounding neighborhoods.

“By generating in situ data with the help of citizen scientists, we envision the app serving supplementary data to scientists as they model mosquito population outbreaks,” says Rusty Low of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, “And equally important is the ability of the app to act as an enabling tool for citizen scientists who want to reduce disease risk in their communities.”

IGES’ work has been picked up by the local media, click here for a Portuguese language broadcast on the program’s activity, or here for a Spanish language news article.
