NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative

IGES is leading the NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) through a five-year cooperative agreement. NESEC is one of 27 projects selected in September 2015 by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) as part of a competitive announcement. NESEC is a partnership between IGES and NASA Earth science divisions at three NASA Centers: Goddard Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Langley Research Center.

 

NASA Earth STEM Assets are at the foundation of all NESEC activities and fuel three interrelated areas: 1) Authentic STEM Experiences for learners through GLOBE Student Research Campaigns and GLOBE Observer citizen science; 2) Direct Connections to Learners through partners; and 3) organizing Thematic Core Content and working strategically with external partners and collaborators to adapt and disseminate core content to support the needs of specific education audiences

This cross-organization team is building pathways between NASA’s Earth-related STEM assets to large, diverse audiences in order to enhance STEM teaching, learning and opportunities for learners throughout their lifetimes. These STEM assets include subject matter experts (scientists, engineers, and education specialists), science and engineering content, and authentic participatory and experiential opportunities.

 

NESEC activities and products include:

 

GLOBE Observer  – Download the GLOBE Observer app and start contributing ground observations to NASA science related to clouds. Coming in 2017: Mosquito Mappers (mapping mosquito larvae) and Adopt-a-Pixel (mapping land cover).

 

Strategic Partnerships: NESEC is building pathways to learners by leveraging the large reach of strategic collaborations that directly reach large, national groups of learners and educators of all levels. These include external partnerships with groups like Odyssey of the Mind, an International creative problem-solving competition, as well as fostering collaborations across the NASA SMD collective of education projects and networks, Including: [email protected] Library; Science Museum of Minnesota/National Informal Science Education Network (NISE-Net); WGBH/PBS Learning Media; 2017 Total Solar Eclipse; Earth to Sky; NASA Museum Alliance; and more

 

National Parks – from Space: This collection of stories and images was compiled from NASA’s Earth Observatory for Earth Science Week 2016, which had the theme “Our Shared Geoheritage.” The NESEC team worked with Earth to Sky (a NASA-National Park System partnership) and NASA’s Landsat mission outreach to create this curated collection and identified strategies and supplemental resources for educators to use the stories with middle and high school students.

 

Educators Toolkit for Framing Phenomena-Based Student InvestigationThis toolkit was designed to support student investigation of Earth systems for Earth Science Week 2017, with the theme “Earth and Human Activity.” The toolkit includes quick links to a broad suite of NASA Earth science data exploration tools, as well as background information on a wide variety of topics.

 

Mapping NASA Earth Science and Observations to K-12 Education: IGES is mapping NASA Earth science to educationally relevant topics, including K–12 learning progressions from the NRC Framework for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), including links to data sources to support student research, learning resources, and multimedia related to the NGSS learning progression related to Earth and Space Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Engineering Design.

 

GLOBE Student Research Campaigns: NESEC partners are leading student research campaigns on El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and U.S. Air Quality
