NASA Earth and Space Science

2005/06 Education Workshop Expectations back to contents

The 2005 NASA Earth and Space Science Education Workshop is designed to meet Agency education goals and reflect the new Science Mission Directorate.

This workshop is professional development for NASA educators, including Educator Resource Centers (ERCs), Aerospace Education Services Program specialists (AESP), and Space Science Broker Facilitators.  It will include an introduction to newly approved education products from the NASA Science Mission Directorate. Additionally, new and exciting NASA research will be presented. Via brainstorming sessions, you’ll work in teams to directly apply the materials presented to state and national standards (We want you to actually see where each new product will fit into already crowded curricula) and identify possible collaborations. .

Each day of the workshop will contain presentations on both content (Earth-Sun, solar system and universe) and education products.  At the end of each day, you will provide feedback on what you have learned and how this will apply to your goals as NASA educators.  On the last day, you will be given time to fill out an evaluation of the entire workshop.

By attending the NASA Earth and Space Science Education Products workshop you have agreed to take steps throughout the coming year to apply what you have learned to meet NASA education goals. It is critical that you report in NEEIS your education activities using the education products presented. [This web site can be found through the main page of the workshop web site   www.strategies.org/feb2006conf .]

Brainstorming Sessions back to schedule

There will be brainstorming sessions throughout the workshop. These sessions are intended to help you do your job more effectively by directly relating each product to the national and state - science, technology, and mathematics standards. The number one request from the pre-workshop surveys was that the materials presented be related the standards that now tightly restrict what is ultimately used in the classroom.

Before coming to the session, participants should collect their state science, technology, and mathematics standards in any format they are comfortable using (e.g. printed or if you bring a laptop, a word document or pdf file would work as well). You will need these with you during the brainstorming sessions.

General Process:

  • Before the workshop (the week before or during the trip out) familiarize yourself with you state science, technology, and mathematics standards.
  • Participants will be assigned to a brainstorming groups randomly.
  • During the brainstorming session, a group leader will be assigned. This person is responsible for leading the discussion, and keeping the group on-task.
  • Each group will also have a recorder. This person is responsible for keeping track of the comments and preparing key comments for reporting out to the full group. .
  • Lastly, there will be a presenter, responsible for presenting their group “report” at the end of the brainstorming session.
