This is a planned workshop follow-up to the presentaiton delivered 6/25/2010. Participants of this portion are expected to work through the exercise with Susan present to help and supply context as needed.
The passage of a hurricane causes a large transfer of heat between the ocean surface and the atmosphere. It also causes surface waters to diverge, bringing cooler water from below to the surface (upwelling). These effects are so large that they can be seen by a drop in sea surface temperature (SST) in satellite data observations along the path of the storm. The cooler water conditions may last for a week or longer after the storm. In this MY NASA DATA session, explore two versions (teacher-directed and inquiry-based) of a classroom-ready lesson, ÒHurricanes as Heat EnginesÓ. Through graphical images and data plots, you will examine a historical Category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Rita, that crossed the Gulf of Mexico during September 18-24, 2005. Susan Moore will present this lesson and invites your questions and comments

2006 Earth & Space Science Education Products Workshop
The Earth System Science Education Alliance (ESSEA) supports educational institutions across the country in offering a series of online Earth system science courses for teachers. Working in collaborative groups, teachers earn graduate or continuing education credit while solving problems, building models, and designing classroom activities.
Working collaboratively with teachers in Maine, New York and Japan was quite enlightening, I wish all my graduate courses were this engaging and that they encouraged such camaraderie. Erin Gannon, a high school teacher from New York
ESSEA is funded through a cooperative agreement awarded to IGES by the National Science Foundation under its Geoscience Teacher Training (GEO-Teach) program, which supports projects designed to improve the quality of geoscience education, primarily at the middle and high school levels. GEO-Teach projects provide pre-service teacher training, in-service professional development and access to high-quality curricular materials.
ESSEA was initially developed through NASA support from 2000-2005. NASA continues to provide funding for the project to develop K-12 Earth system science modules, to be used in the ESSEA courses, that are related to the 2007-2009 International Polar Year (IPY).
