Weeks Thirteen and Fourteen: Hurricane
Hurricane Dennis

Labor Day weekend, 1999, Hurricane Dennis with sustained winds in excess of 75 miles per hour, was bearing down on the coastal communities of the Carolinas. For tracking information, see the historical page.

From August 24 through its landfall on September 5, Dennis was a storm to watch. It first threatened North Carolina with 105 mph winds and crashing waves on the Outer Banks. Later it gusted as high as 121 mph. After moving out to sea and weakening, it reversed direction and came ashore with 70 mph winds in Morehead City, NC. Tornadoes were later reported in Virginia along the rain bands of Hurricane Dennis.

For more information on hurricanes and their history, see the USA Today reference page.

You will analyze the impact of such a storm on the coastal area that is affected by the hurricane as well as the interactions among the spheres as a result of the storm.
